FARMINGTON — The Willmar Velocity 12-and-under fast-pitch softball team wrapped up its season nearly the best way possible: with a state championship.
Willmar won the four-week fall-ball season state championship on Sunday with four straight victories. The Velocity beat Chanhassen Gold 20-2, Inver Grove Heights Red 8-3, St. Michael-Albertville Blue 20-1 and Stillwater Red 5-0 to earn the championship. All the teams were in Class B.
Willmar's 12U team went 5-1-2 during the regular season and played in the Tier 7 state championship.
"We had a great fall season," said head coach Andrew Kveene.
Team members are: Claire DeLeeuw, Emma Ewert, Brityn Gordon, Leah Kafati-Torres, Aspen Krakow, Lily Lingl, Ahria Peters, Ashtyn Solberg, Teagan Streiff and Lexi Uecher
Coaches are Andrew Kveene, Britney Lingl, Brock Streff and Sissi Torres.
"I'm very proud of the girls," Andrew Kveene said. "(We had) many great accomplishments for youth softball this year.
"Many of the girls on this team won the Tier 3 state tournament over the summer and the other half of the team won the Crow River Gold 10U tournament. Those girls moved up from 10U to 12U."
The summer team that won the state title wound up second at a national tournament that included teams from the upper midwest.
